How Coffee Came to India?

The coffee bean first made its way to India smuggled in the pockets of a Muslim Saint. Saint Baba Budan tied seven coffee beans to his waist on his return from Pilgrimage to Mecca and planted the beans on the Chandragiri hills in the Chikkamagaluru district. The infamous smuggle is regarded as an act of bravery as there were strict rules against exportation of unroasted coffee from Arabia. Thus, by bravery and wit Baba Budan became a huge influencer on coffee by preventing Arabia’s continued monopoly on the industry.

After strategic cultivation of the seven beans planted in 1670, the first Indian coffee plantation was finally established in 1840. The time and attention paid off as Indian coffee is the highest quality shade-grown bean in the world. Grown in monsoon conditions and inter-cropped with spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, the beans retain a distinctive flavor that entices many fans from all over the globe. Due to such high-demand, India exports nearly 80% of their beans.
